Ebook About New York Times bestselling author Carolyn Brown returns with a heartbreakingly hilarious novel about three women who had nothing in common, except their husband.Leaving one widow behind is unfortunate. Leaving three widows behind is just plain despicable. Oil heiress Kate Steele knew her not-so-dearly departed husband was a con man, but she’s shocked that Conrad racked up two more wives without divorcing her first. The only remnant of their miserable marriage she plans to keep is their lakeside cabin in Bootleg, Texas. Unfortunately, she’s not the only woman with that idea.Fiery, strong-willed Jamie wishes Conrad were still alive—so she could kill the scoundrel herself. But for their daughter’s sake, she needs that property. As does Amanda—twenty-eight, pregnant, and still weeping over the loss of her true love. On a broiling July day, all three arrive in Bootleg…with a dogged detective right behind who’s convinced that at least one of them conspired to commit murder. One momentous summer filled with revelations, quirky neighbors, and barefoot evenings on the porch offers three women the chance to make the journey from enemies to friends, and claim a bright, new beginning.Book The Barefoot Summer Review :
This book was ridiculous. I only finished it because I knew it would be a quick read, and, that way, I'd at least get something out of it: credit on my reading challenge ;) It lost me in the first chapter- the two other wives found out about their husband's death on the news, and then the cop told them when the 'family' had planned the funeral?? WTF, I don't mean to be rude, but is the author a moron, or just thinks her readers are? I can suspend a little reality for the sake of a good story, but come on, that would NEVER happen! They would never release the name of the deceased w/o contacting the legal next-of-kin, and since the other two thought they were exactly that, how could they ever think that was normal? The cop, who is investigating all three women, starts a personal relationship with one of the suspects; even if at that point he didn't believe she had done it, no seasoned detective worth his spit would jeopardize his career and the investigation like that. The whole thing was ridiculous. Terrible dialogue, annoying and often times unbelievable characters... getting credit for finished this on my reading challenge wasn't even worth it. ABANDON SHIP First let me say that the female character development was written quite well. I felt I knew all three ladies quite well. After that, the story line was predictable by the 2nd chapter and the mystery of the murder of this husband of these three wasn't developed at all. The resolution to the murder was unbelievable and wasn't resolved until the very end of the book in only a few paragraphs. The characters that were involved in the murder weren't written about until almost the last chapter. Very unsatisfying. The character, Waylon, was a detective and a cowboy. I found his school boy crush on the main character, Kate, out of character for his type of individual. Cowboys are rugged and to the point. This guy was mushy and more like a 20 year old girl in love than a seasoned detective, ranch hand, tough guy. Aside from the fact that it's well know among crime readers that the #1 no-no is to never get personally involved with a prime suspect during an investigation. By the 4th chapter, this guy was breaking every investigator rule in the book.I kept reading and scanning the last half of the book thinking that a twist or a complication or something would happen to develop this story. Sadly, that did not happen. I found this author to have writing skills - but plot line was weak, at best, and romances were quite sappy. Not the type of thing you would expect from an oil baroness and a rugged cowboy.
